The CCE is Now Hiring
The CCE is hiring for the 2010-2011 school year. Get paid to make a difference in the community! Peer Mentor, Project Leader, and READS Mentor positions are available.

Peer Mentor ~ Peer Mentors work on a wide variety of assignments including representing the CCE as initial point of contact, fielding student and community requests for service learning involvement, monitoring participant placements and projects, record-keeping, and general office duties. They also work with local community agencies to coordinate service learning opportunities for students and respond to student requests for service learning involvement and assist with placement selection.

Project Leader ~ Project Leaders work individually and as a team to develop and lead community service learning projects, including recruiting and encouraging student participants, providing transportation to community sites, and facilitating reflection of project experiences.

READS Mentor ~ READS Mentor positions were created to help Washington State University and the Center for Civic Engagement respond to the America Reads Challenge to improve literacy among school-aged children in our communities. Each of these positions requires tutoring in a rural town (Colton, Colfax, Palouse, or Garfield), approximately 20-25 minutes from Pullman.

Graduate Assistant Coordinator ~ Coordinators are responsible for developing and maintaining programs of the Center for Civic Engagement. Coordinator positions fulfill four distinct yet intersecting roles: Academic Service Learning, Marketing and Outreach, Community Projects, and School Partnerships. All assistantships are partially funded through the work study program and currently include an operating fee waiver (for tuition) and graduate health insurance. Interested graduate students should submit a cover letter and resume to debifitz@wsu.edu.

Campus on the Run ~ 3/27/10
Campus on the Run is an annual 5k (3.1mile) fun-run, co-sponsored by the CCE and University Recreation. Students, faculty, staff and community members, 18 or over, are welcome. Both runners and walkers are encouraged to participate.
Proceeds benefit a local non-profit agency. This year's recepient is Backyard Harvest. Previous recipients have included: Palouse Conservation District, Palouse Discovery Science Center, Neill Public Library, Whitman County Humane Society, Council on Aging & Human Services, Alternatives to Violence of the Palouse, and others. Students Serve ~ Serve and Earn Money
Applications are now being accepted for spring and summer service projects!
Students Serve gives money to undergraduate and graduate students so
they can make a difference in their communities. During the fall application cycle, 7 grants were awarded! Any student with an idea about how to address a local, national, or international problem should submit an application.

Get Involved in Your Community
To view civic engagement opportunities near campus and establish your own portfolio of community service experiences while at WSU, visit our Students page and follow the instructions to create a service profile on SLPro.
Once you register with SLPro and sign up for a service opportunity, use the Monthly Record of Service Hours Form to track your hours. Your site supervisor must verify your hours on the lines provided. Their signature can either be on EACH line or at a DIAGONAL so their signature is each line where you have hours recorded. Submit your record of service hours to the CCE office located in CUB L48 to have them recorded into the SLPro database. Submission of service hours to the CCE is required of all student participants.

Looking for a great project this semester? PCEI has two dates for stream restoration and need your help! On April 3rd and/or April 24th students will be asked to perform a variety of tasks which may include planting and watering native trees and shrubs, invasive weed control, and plant care around the PCEI campus in Moscow or at one of their local stream restoration sites.
