Strategic Goals

1. Enhance the quality of learning and well being of all WSU students through culturally diverse civic engagement and leadership experiences.     

  • Increase the range of civic engagement opportunities, with an emphasis on those experiences related to leadership for social change.

  • Support student learning with a developmental approach that incorporates relevancy and readiness to participate.

  • Increase credit-bearing civic engagement experiences and improve structured opportunities for reflection.

  • Improve assessment methods and strategies with a focus on identified learning outcomes and program effectiveness.

2. Continuously develop key campus and community partnerships that promote the mission of the Center for Civic Engagement.

  • Foster relationships with campus partners, especially those related to an enhanced civic engagement mission and/or organizationally aligned.

  • Promote inter-agency communication and networking, building on CCE strengths in human services, education, and environmental issues.

  • Establish and foster regional, national and international partnerships.

  • Improve assessment methods and strategies relative to campus and community partnerships and community impacts of student civic engagement.

3. Align the Center for Civic Engagement with institutional initiatives that support a culture of engagement.

  • Support the land-grant mission of the WSU system through an effective partnership with WSU Extension.

  • Promote and assess service learning and civic engagement as important contributors to campus diversity, student retention, and graduation.

  • Ensure consistency of standards and best practices with civic engagement programs at land-grant AAU institutions.

4. Maximize program resources to accommodate increased responsibility for the student experience.

  • Develop and maintain a clear, consistent, public message with respect to the mission of the CCE. 

  • Provide continuous and comprehensive staff training and professional development for all CCE staff.

  • Refine processes to create effective, efficient and sustainable procedures with particular attention to risk management.

How Does Civic Engagement Support WSU's Learning Goals?

  • Engaging with issues in a community context provides opportunities to apply academic specialty knowledge and evaluate and use new information.

  • New ideas and knowledge gained through civic learning promotes critical thinking and the ability to analyze real world problems

  • Experience with diverse perspectives and life situations contributes to cultural competence, effective communication skills, and awareness of self in society.
