Cougar READS

Cougar READS Program
The Cougar Reading Enrichment and Academic Development through Service (READS) Program (formally referred to as the Rural Tutor Program) was developed in response to the America Reads challenge.  At Washington State University, the CCE has been a participant of the America Reads Challenge program for over 10 years.

Through this program, eligible WSU students are paid to serve as a K-8 tutor in the towns of Colton, Colfax, Palouse and Garfield.  The READS Mentors provide individual, group or classroom assistance to the schools. The READS Mentors also lead after school programming and participate in events, such as family literacy nights that the CCE hosts at the schools.

America Reads is a program that began in 1997 and challenged universities to start work-study programs to ensure every child can read independently by the third grade. Building on the success of America Reads, America Counts was initiated in 1999 to ensure all students have a foundation of algebra and geometry by the end of the 9th grade.

Students with work study that are interested in becoming a READS mentor, please contact Shannon Johnson at literacy@wsu.edu.
