Earth Day

April 22, 2013

We only have one Earth, let’s keep it turning! Earth Day is a time when everyone is asked to spread awareness and appreciation for our world. Learn more about recycling and green living. Ride the bus, take your bike, or carpool to work. Learn more about clean energy and environmental issues that impact us all. Take local, national or global steps to protect our world.

Every year, the CCE offers a variety of environmental service projects in our community for students, faculty and staff. Join us during Earth Day to take care of this precious resource we call home! Projects are listed below.

Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute Earth Day Project
Every year, the Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute celebrates Earth Day by hosting several environmental projects open to the public. Participants should always dress for the weather, be prepared to get a little dirty, and to get in touch with nature! Students can sign up on SLPro to receive service hours tracking, and all others need only show up at the scheduled project!

The Palouse Clearwater Environmental Institute is a non-profit organization that has dedicated the last 25 years to increase citizen involvement in decisions that affect our region’s environment. This is partly accomplished through promoting the ecological health and social welfare of the Palouse-Clearwater region and providing opportunities for the community to participate in the conservation, preservation, and restoration of environmentally sensitive lands, natural areas, and unique ecosystems.

Earth Facts:
  • 2.5 Billion grocery bags would be saved in one year if only 25% of shoppers use 10 less bags per month. Next time you’re out, spend the few bucks on the reusable bags to cut back on unnecessary waste.
  • On average, Americans use 200 million gallons of gas to drive 4 billion miles a day. Walk or take the bus on Earth Day. Along with helping the environment, you will get fresh air and maybe notice something new about your surroundings since you don’t have to focus on driving.
  • Recycling can save not only trees but other resources too. Each ton of paper that is recycled can save 380 gallons of oil. Each year, Americans alone use 50 million tons of paper. That’s about 850 million trees! Take the extra steps to recycle, start recycling at home, and if your place of work or home doesn’t recycle, advocate for it.
  • Fuel consumption can be cut down up to 10% if you turn down your thermostat just one degree. So put some comfy slippers on and a sweater and lower that thermostat!
  • Every day 50+ species of plants and animals become extinct because of human influences. Spend Earth Day planting trees, restoring streams, or taking any of these steps towards living a more sustainable lifestyle. The CCE can help you find a project.
